Box Score

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior Sarah Totten delivered a three-run double and junior Kassie Stanfill connected on a two-run homer as the University Louisville Softball team defeated the visiting Kentucky Wildcats 5-4 at Ulmer Stadium.

After issuing a walk and a hit in the first inning, Louisville starting pitcher Kassie Stanfill retired nine straight batters before giving up a leadoff double to Molly Johnson in the fourth. Stanfill worked around her to get out of the inning.

With the score knotted at 0-0, Totten came through for the Cards in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run double. Christina Roesel and Kristi Cunningham delivered back to back two-out singles and Melissa Roth reached on an error to load the bases for Totten.

Kentucky got on the scoreboard during the fifth inning as Meagan Aull earned a base hit, stole second, and took third on Audrey Meyer's fly-out. Aull crossed the plate when Natalie Smith reached on an error to make a 3-1 game.

The Cardinals increased their lead to 5-1, behind Stanfill's two-run homer in the fifth inning. Colby Wherry led off with a double and Stanfill followed with a two-run shot over the left field fence.

The Wildcats added a run in the sixth when Megan Yocke led off with a base hit, took second on a wild pitch, and came home on Aull's double, making the score 5-2.

Molly Johnson's two-run homer in the top of the seventh pulled UK within a run. Smith started the inning with a single to set up Johnson's two-run shot, which brought the score to 5-4 with no outs. Louisville second baseman, Roesel made a solid defensive play at to get DeMartine out at first. Destinee Mordecai grounded out to second and Yocke popped up to shortstop to end the game.

Stanfill (6-4) got the win, allowing one unearned run on three hits and striking out seven in five innings. Reliever Kristin Wadwell gave up three earned runs on four hits and struck out three in two innings.

Amber Matousck (7-9) took to loss, giving up five runs, only two earned with one strikeout in six innings. Johnson was 2 for 3 with a two run homerun. Aull was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI. The Wildcats drop to 13-14 on the season.
