The No. 32-ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team pushed its record to 14-4 with a 7-0 sweep of visiting Xavier in the front end of a tennis doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

"Xavier battled us on almost every court today," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We are still trying get a better handle on playing a high level of tennis on the outdoor courts. "

The Cardinals grabbed the momentum early in the match when they took the doubles point. Ecarma mixed up his doubles lineup and the changes proved to be successful as U of L won all three matchups. The No. 1 pair of David Simon and Viktor Maksimcuk took their match over Chris Hennlinger and Doug Matthews 8-3. At No. 2, the duo of Austen Childs and James McArthur rolled 8-5 over JT Tonbeck and Ra'ess Ismail. Simon Childs and Kenneth Nordheim made it a sweep with an 8-1 win over Anthony Palmenter and Brian Starr.

"No. 3 doubles looked very dominant today as well as No. 2 and No. 3 singles. David Simons and Simon Childs are making their fair share of progress to move our team forward. The doubles combos are really clicking now."

U of L carried over the momentum into the singles play as they swept all six positions. Xavier came up short on two three-set matches when Austen Childs battled to win 7-6, 5-7, 11-9 at No. 1. Viktor Maksimcuk made it interesting when he won the first set 7-6 but stumbled 1-6 in the second only to win easily 6-2 in the third at No. 2. At No. 6, Robert Rotaru was challenged by Mike Dieciuc but held on to win 7-5, 7-6. No. 3 singles player David Simon and No. 4 singles player Simon Childs both won their matches 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Alejandro Calligari won his first set 6-2 and then held on to win 7-5 in the second.
